Viking penannular brooch Br-100

kr570.00

This penannular brooch is based on a Viking Age find from Birka. The original is made of bronze and is housed at the Historical Museum in Stockholm. It can be seen here: https://samlingar.shm.se/object/23EB057A-4D6C-46AF-81AF-FA95A4D43548

The discovery was made in a wealthy man’s grave with warrior equipment, known as Bj-886.

An interesting detail is that the penannular brooch was found by the right thigh, which was also the case with a large proportion of other penannular brooches from Birka. One interpretation is that it was used to fasten a wrap-over tunic, but there are also other possible uses. The pin is very strong and is also suitable for larger cloaks.

Made of bronze.
